Beans & Bread
Service Learning Project
Saint Pius X eighth grade students are privileged to
participate in a unique service learning opportunity. Over the
course of the school year, all eighth graders visit Beans and Bread
Outreach Center in Baltimore City in small groups of 4-6 to serve a meal
to their guests. The students meet for an orientation during the month
of September. On the day of their service, the students meet in the
chapel for prayer and an introduction to their day. They are then
transported to Beans and Bread. Upon arrival, they are trained in their
job for the day which could be a meal server, a bus person, a drink
pourer, a dish washer or a dessert server. Work begins at 10:00 am and
continues until 1:00pm. After lunch, the students return to St. Pius X
for reflection and wrap-up of their day. This service project has proven
to be a favorite experience of their eighth grade year among students.
They are truly transformed by this experience. Some have noted during
the reflection that they feel very lucky for all they have been given.
Others have been touched in such a way that they feel that
never again will they be able to ignore the problems of hunger and
homelessness . It is our hope that through this service learning
project, our eighth graders will leave our school knowing that they are
called to live the Gospel message and ensure that everyone is granted
the dignity and respect they deserve as unique creations of God
