  ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

St. Pius X School, located two and a half miles south of Towson, is an elementary school with a current enrollment of approximately 335 students, about 65% of whom are Catholic.  We offer both half day and full day Three and Four Year Old Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten as well as grades one to eight.  Usually those students who apply to Catholic high schools are accepted and we generally have several students that are awarded scholarships to the various high schools.  Our standardized test scores are consistently high.

St. Pius X School is Middle States accredited.

The distinctive purpose of St. Pius X School is to provide educational opportunities that will lead to a fuller humanity and Christianity - to provide opportunities for intellectual excellence and spiritual development.  We intend that the learning experiences offered here will serve as an introduction to a complete lifestyle which takes its meaning and direction from the Christian Community.

St. Pius X School follows the curriculum guides of both the State of Maryland and the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  We exceed these guidelines by offering a foreign language (Spanish) five days a week to students in grades six through eight and a math program that challenges students in both a standard and advanced Algebra I course.

Students attend Physical Education, Spanish, Music, Art, Library and Computer classes.

Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 are departmentalized for their core curriculum.

Computers are used in the classrooms by students to compliment lessons.  The Sister Valeria Wagner Computer Lab is being utilized by all students and teachers for instruction and cross-curricular activities.

GENERAL INFORMATION

RESOURCE ROOM: The Catherine Cronin Remmert Resource Center is staffed three days a week to offer support to students.

ATHLETIC: The Athletic Association sponsors a sports program in soccer, basketball, and girl’s softball.  The Physical Education Department offers cross country and track programs.

BAND: Paid instrumental lessons are offered to students in grades four to eight.  These students also participate in the school band.  A demonstration is held in September and information is sent home for sign-up.  Select members of the Band perform each year at a Band Program Festival, competing with other schools.

CHORUS: Our Music Teacher is the director of the school chorus.  Students in grades four to eight audition for the chorus.  This group performs several times a year for both the school and outside groups.

DRAMA: Students in middle school audition for the annual spring musical.  Two performances are given.  Techniques of staging and production are taught through this activity.  The Drama Department Moderator coordinates with the Art Department students for design of original scenery and props.

ENRICHMENT: Field trips taken throughout the year are both educational and cultural.  We also offer several, in house, cultural experiences for the students.

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (Parent/Teacher group): This very active organization is a vital means of support to the school and an important channel of communication between the parents and the school.

MATH/ ACADEMIC CLUB: The Math Club meets once a week to investigate topics not usually covered in class, like the binary system, factorials and expanded fractions.  Students in middle school are welcome to join.

YEARBOOK: Students in the middle school may join the staff.  Students meet after school periodically to take pictures and prepare the layout for publication.

SAFETY PATROL: The Safety Patrol is comprised of student volunteers in the middle school to assist in making the school and parking lot a safe place for students.

ST. PIUS X SCHOOL BEFORE AND AFTER CARE PROGRAM: This before and after school program for our school children is open when school is in session.  The hours are 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and

3:00 to 6:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. Brochures and applications are available in the school office.

SCHOOL GUIDANCE: A school guidance consultant works with groups of students within the classroom setting two days a week.

SERVICE PROJECTS: All students participate in service projects for our school and community throughout the year. Additionally, some students serve the parish regularly as altar servers.

STUDENT COUNCIL: The Student Council offers students the opportunity to see themselves grow in leadership and responsibility.  They are elected representatives of our student body.  They strive not only to serve the school but also the community.

UNIFORMS: Students wear uniforms in grades one through eight. Summer uniforms can be worn from the beginning of school until October l5th and from April 15 to the end of the school year.  Gym uniforms are worn on gym days.
